Volcano Eruption Prompts Alaska Flight Cancellations

By KOMO Staff & News Services

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA - Alaska Airlines has canceled 28 flights because of the possibility of volcanic ash from Augustine Volcano.

They include flights between Anchorage and Seattle, and Fairbanks and Seattle.

The volcano, about 180 miles south of Anchorage, erupted several times Friday, sending clouds of ash into the air.

The Seattle-based airline says it canceled the flights as a safety precaution.

The flights were scheduled to operate Friday afternoon and evening.

Besides Seattle, the airline will not operate scheduled flights between Anchorage and the Alaska cities of Juneau and Kodiak. Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Portland also are on the list.

The airline expects to resume the flights sometime after 8:30 a.m. Saturday
