TACOMA - One man is under arrest and another is in the hospital after a stolen car crashed into the waters of Puget Sound following a police chase Saturday night.
The incident unfolded after 10 p.m. when officers began pursuing a stolen car at high speed near 19th Street and Union Avenue. Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum says the patrol car slowed down a minute later near Cheney Stadium because of safety concerns, but continued following the vehicle in a low-speed pursuit. A short time later, the car plunged into Puget Sound at a road end near the Narrows Marina. The vehicle landed in the water 15 feet from the shore then sank to the bottom. When police came upon the scene moments later, one of two men in the car was swimming to shore. He told officers that another man was still in the vehicle underwater. Emergency crews were able to rescue the man from the car. He was transported to the hospital, but his condition is not available. The man who swam to shore was placed under arrest. |
