Auburn store closes abruptly, leaves customers out of cash, goods

AUBURN, Wash. -- A bitter divorce is detailing the failures of a local furniture company that has left several customers out of cash and without any new furniture to show for it.

Alaya Décor suddenly closed up shop two weeks ago without any notice to its customers, including those who have yet to receive what they've already paid for.

"I feel really taken advantage of," said Eric Stober, who paid $2,700 for two sofas and a chair from the store.

Three months have gone by, but Stober is still waiting. He says he's one of many people who have been ripped off by the store owner.

"They knew all along that they were planning this and they were going to absorb as much money as they could from anyone they could get it from," he said.

Court documents identify the store owners as Jeffrey and Selene Hill.

KOMO 4 News went to their homes in Auburn and Lake Tapps, but neighbors said the homes have been vacant for some time.

According to newly-filed divorce papers, even family members don't know where Jeffrey Hill is. His wife filed for a restraining order, claiming the man "has issues with gambling" and "bills at the furniture store have not been paid."

Stober is tired of excuses. All he wants is his money back.

"I'm not going to lie down and take it," he said. "I know they're crooks and they're better at the game than I am. But I'm going to use every tool I have."

There are several families in Stober's situation. At least two such families are taking their case to small claims court to get their money back. Anyone else in Stober's situation is urged to contact the KOMO 4 Problem Solvers.
