Police have arrested one man after a strong-arm robbery near the UW campus on Monday. But there still have been no arrests in connection with a rash of violence late last week near the university.
The attacks and robberies have made many people jittery. A crowd of parents and students showed up on campus last night for a town hall meeting, and several said they were scared and demanded that more be done to keep everyone safe.
The lone arrest so far came after a strong-arm robbery Monday evening at about 7:08 p.m. A man who was walking near the campus reported he had been robbed, and Seattle police arrested a suspect a short time later.
Late last week, a string of unrelated, violent crimes took place near the campus in one 36-hour period. But so far they remain unsolved.
The violence came in the wake of an incident a month earlier in which another UW student was beaten with a hammer in an attempted carjacking. There have been no arrests in that attack, either.
"We've had attacks in the area before ... but we seem to be having a lot of incidents in a shorter period of time," said Ralph Robinson, assistant chief of field operations for the UW police.
The latest string of incidents began just after midnight on Friday as a UW student was walking near campus only about a block from where the attempted carjacking took place.
The student was walking in an alley west of the 4700 block of 18th Avenue NE when a man jumped out from behind a dumpster with a handgun and demanded money. The student handed over her cash and the gunman fled. The student was not injured.
A detailed description of the gunman was not available.
UW police say the second attack occurred around 2 a.m. Saturday, when four UW students were beaten in the 4700 block of 17th Avenue NE.
The victims told police the men who attacked them were asked to leave a party Friday evening at another location. But later in the night, one of the attackers went looking for the four men and found them at a house near the crime scene.
A fight ensued that eventually spilled out onto the street, with as many as 10 people involved - some armed with bricks, police said.
Two of the victims had to be treated for injuries at the UW Medical Center. The attackers all fled the scene before officers could arrive.
The most recent incident - a stabbing - took place at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the 4500 block of University Way, Seattle police said.
The assault began as a verbal argument between two men, police said. It escalated into violence as one man pulled out a knife and stabbed the other at least twice in the chest. The victim was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. There is no suspect in custody.
In the incident last month, a 22-year-old student was attacked in her car just before 7 a.m. on Jan. 8, at the 1800 Block of 47th Avenue NE. The student was left in critical condition and was released from the hospital just earlier this week.
