Ex-school counselor gets 5 years for raping teen

PUYALLUP, Wash. (AP) - A former Puyallup junior high school counselor convicted of raping a teenage student has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Diane Amanda Hillman worked as a counselor at Ballou Junior High School when she began a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl. Hillman was 39 years old at the time. In February, Hillman pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree child rape and one count of third-degree child molestation. In her sentencing Friday, the 40-year-old Hillman asked Pierce County Superior Court Judge Lisa Worswick if she could be sentenced under a special provision that would keep her out of prison but require extensive sex offender treatment. The judge denied Hillmans' request because the judge said Hillman violated her position of trust. During the investigation leading to Hillman's prosecution, the victim told her mother that the two had become close after she broke up with her girlfriend earlier in the year. On April 21, 2007, a police officer found the 15-year-old girl and Hillman in the counselor's vehicle in a park late at night. They had seen a movie and Hillman was supposed to bring the girl straight home, court documents said. Police notified the school of the incident. Hillman was ordered to have no further contact with the girl, and she was placed on administrative leave for two weeks, but she was not removed from the school. On Aug. 1, the girl's mother called police and said she was concerned about text messages on her daughter's phone that were sent from Hillman. According to the court documents, the messages said things like "I will lose my job," "I miss you," and "I will wait for you." "(We) went back and took a second look. Girl admitted. We went back and made an arrest," Troyer said. The 15-year-old girl was interviewed by investigators and said that Hillman had fondled her and molested her several times. |
