Ken Schram: ABC botched the debate
By Ken Schram
Wednesday's ABC presidential debate was a debacle.
I think Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos came across looking less like broadcast journalists and more like snickering TV reporters. I don't care that they seemed to pound away at Barack Obama more than they did Hillary Clinton. I figure if Obama can't handle the pressure of being the front runner, how can he be expected to handle the pressure of being president? And it's not that I didn't want to see the two candidates squirm under tough questions dealing with the national economy, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, immigration, health care - a whole host of issues vital to the American public. No, my complaint with Gibson and Stephanopoulos is that they chose to waste an inordinate amount of time asking about stupid stuff that means squat. Spare me the dribble about flag lapel pins. William Ayers? Nothing but a right wing talk radio feeding frenzy. To quote Michael Douglas from the movie "The American President": "We've got some serious problems and...this is a time for serious people." When Americans needed serious, Charlie and George traded it for silly. Have something to say to Ken? E-mail him at kenschram@komo4news.com. And be sure to join Ken, along with John Carlson, on "The Commentators", which airs every weekday from 3-6 p.m. on AM 570 KVI. It's a lively exchange of information, insight and perspective with two guys who don't agree on much, but still manage to enjoy each other as they tackle issues of the day. Even better, callers are invited in on the verbal action. |
